THE Summer Youth Olympic Games being held August 16-28 in Nanjing attracts athletes and tourists from all over the world, drawing people’s attention to the historic city.
As the provincial capital of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing is a modern city as well as an ancient capital of six dynasties with a nickname of “the Metropolitan of Ten Empires.”
The 2,500 years of history has left the city with countless historic sites, and the mountainous landscape endows it with numerous scenic spots. The ruins of Jiankang City, the world largest city in ancient times, are preserved in Nanjing Library.
Along with Rome, Nanjing was called “The Center of World Classic Civilization” in the Southern Dynasty period(AD420-589). Opposite the Nanjing Library sits the presidential palace, the former residence of Sun Yat-sen. Not far away are Xuanwu Lake, Sun Yatsen’s mausoleum scenic area, and Underwater World.
