MEGAN Nicole enjoys a global fan base of millions, including hundreds of thousands in China, although she hasn’t even released a single song.
The rising American pop star took the music world by storm with 518 million views on YouTube, where she became popular by singing well-known songs of famous stars, such as Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Katy Perry.
Nicole will perform in Shanghai at the Mixing Room in Mercedes-Benz Arena on December 13. Three years ago, she made her debut appearance in Shanghai with Tiffany Alvord and Jason Chen. She was also invited to perform on one of China’s most popular entertainment variety shows on Hunan Satellite TV.
After three years, Nicole will come back to Shanghai to showcase her debut album, “Escape.”
“I absolutely loved my debut show in Shanghai and the audience was wonderful. I am so excited to be back. I can’t wait to perform, meet people, eat amazing food and do a little shopping,” Nicole told Shanghai Daily via e-mail. “I’m really excited to be performing all of the new songs from my album. I’ll also be doing some past original songs as well as a few covers from some of my favorite artists.”
Born in Houston in 1993 and raised in Katy, Texas, Nicole was influenced by an array of sounds from the previous generation, including Queen, Al Green, Stevie Wonder and various artists from the 1970s funk era.
Her own talents began emerging when she was just 8 years old while she played with the family’s karaoke machine. It was around this time that she was also introduced to the piano, a skill she became proficient in and which she eventually used to lead her church’s youth group.
Nicole credits her fans and the people around her for her persistence and continued success, stating:
“It’s crazy to think that this girl from Katy, Texas, has been blessed to travel and perform in places around the globe. Places I could never even imagine going to, let alone play my music at! My fans are the ones who discovered me and who continue to inspire me. They are the reason I get to do what I love each day. I’m thankful to be on this journey and to have my fans supporting me along the way. I’m excited to continue to create new music and meet new people each day.”
In 2009, Nicole uploaded her first video to YouTube, her cover of “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon. She followed this video with more covers on her YouTube channel, which included songs by Bruno Mars, Perry, Swift, and other artists. She also has several collaborations with fellow YouTube artists such as Alvord, Chen and Tyler Ward.
Nicole released her first original song, “B-e-a-utiful”, on July 15, 2011. The “pop ditty” received 1 million hits after only two days and had 27 million hits by November 2013.
Currently, Nicole has over 2.7 million subscribers. She was quickly recognized for her raw talent and passion for music. She became a viral sensation, landing a spot on the coveted Top 100 Music Channels.
Nicole’s debut 5-song EP, “Escape,” released on October 14, features the lead single, “Electrified,” which is a pop hit flashing back to the 1980s.
She has been writing and working on her own music on the album for the past six years. “Escape” showcases her pitch-perfect vocals, captivating melodies and unforgettable lyrics in a series of pop songs that will undoubtedly leave fans wanting more.
“It’s so special to me that I finally get to share some of these songs with my fans now. I get to show them another side of me through the music,” she says. “I get my inspiration from personal experience, my friends, my family, fans, and the world around me.”
Her cover videos received over 2 million views on Youku and over 3 million views on Yin Yue Tai. This is a very impressive record for someone who became famous from YouTube, which is blocked in China.
“December 13 will be the best time for Chinese fans to witness Nicole’s growth and advance in music,” says Michael Craig Enoch, general manager of the concert venue, Mercedes-Benz Arena. “She is definitely a rising star who has big potential. From her music video on YouTube to the original album, she always surprised fans with her amazing musical talent.”
Talking about her career goals, the young artist says: “I really want to discover a sound that’s unique to me. I still haven’t quite found that yet, but it’s all part of the journey. And once I find that sound for a while — who knows — it may change again. But at the end of the day I’m always going to stay true to me. I would love to have my music be in movies and continue to bring my live shows to another level. Who knows exactly what the future holds? But I’m excited to see where this journey takes us.”
