Naked bite serves up healthy and tasty fare

The Naked Retreats team shows no sign of slowing down. Having opened a collection of eco resorts in Moganshan — including Naked Home Village and Naked Stables — they are now bringing a slice of serenity to downtown life.

The new Naked Bite occupies a quiet, leafy spot at the end of Wuyuan Road, near the Wukang Road intersection and very close to Anfu Road. While there is no shortage of good dining options in this area, Naked Bite is a refreshing addition to the scene and has already become a favorite weekend haunt for trendy city dwellers.

The stylish restaurant/café features green plants in every corner of the spa- cious indoor dining area and outdoor terrace that opens to the street. A welcoming, natural vibe is created with the abundant use of raw woods and an impressive vertical garden across one wall. Warm mood lighting and color- ful cushions spice up the otherwise neutral palette.

Staying true to the company’s principles, Naked Bite offers locally sourced, seasonal ingredients prepared according to healthy cooking tech- niques. The menu features a selection of Continental recipes with an Asian flair, integrating a bold blend of fla- vors, cultures and cooking styles.

Naked Bite is an ideal place to hang out with friends or family over a long, leisurely weekend brunch. The 148- yuan (US$23.9) brunch set includes a variety of “small bites,” a “big bite,” a bread basket and dips, plus a choice of coffee or tea.

On this visit, the four small bites featured a plate of olives, duck liver parfait topped with jam, a plate of seared salmon carpaccio and beetroot tartar with crumbled goat cheese plus a small bowl of crunchy salad. The duck liver parfait was rich and paired well with the apricot jam, while the beetroot tartar had a delightful fresh earthy taste that contrasted with the piquant goat cheese. The crunchy salad is a mixture of chickpeas, quinoa, nuts, mixed seasonal vegetables and fruits, cumin and honey. The wide selection of “big bites” ranges from usual brunch items such as eggs Benedict and mushroom omelet, to steak tartar and Asian-style cold noodles. The beef tartar is classic yet doesn’t live up to expectations, lacking in flavor of capers. The cold noodles with assorted vegetables, ginger, scallions and soy vinaigrette dressing is a tasty summer option. It’s also worth indulging in one of Naked Bites’ desserts, such as the tinka tonka (40 yuan), a surprisingly delicious tonka-bean cheese cake with salted caramel ice cream.

The new dinner menu offers more options inspired by Japanese, Mediter- ranean and Chinese cuisines. Chef recommendations include wrap it up (40 yuan), slow-braised short ribs with yuzu pepper (25 yuan/one stick) and miso scallops (75 yuan/3pcs).

Although service standards need improving, the menu and ambience at Naked Bite make it a pleasant spot for a relaxed meal.
