As the China's biggest and most prosperous city, Shanghai has a world class transportation network of flight routes. Everyday there are hundreds of domestic and international flights between Shanghai and many other cities in China as well as many major cities abroad. In order to adapt this kind of situation and meet the people’s  demands to travel, shanghai made a powerful airport construction. There are two  international civil airports in Shanghai, which are Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. As one of the main Chinese airline hubs, Shanghai has established connections with nearly two hundred cities, half domestic ones and half international and regional ones. Direct flights provide the city with connections to dozens of international air terminals such as Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Fukuoka, Osaka, Tokyo, Bangkok, Brussels, Madrid, Paris, Singapore, London, Moscow, Rome as well as regional links with Hong Kong and Macau. Domestic flights link the city with Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xian, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang and others.

The first international airport in shanghai is the Hongqiao international airport. It is situated in the western outskirts of Shanghai, about 13 kilometers (about 8 miles) from downtown area and about 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) from Pudong International Airport. Hongqiao Airport is a hub for China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Juneyao Airlines and Spring Airlines. In 2014, Hongqiao Airport handled 37,960,200 passengers, a growth of 21.3% over 2010, which makes it the 4th busiest airport in mainland China and the 21st busiest in the world. With the function of the alternate international flights, Hongqiao airport is mainly for the domestic departure and arrival, bearing average daily take-off and landing flights around 540 sorties. Since 1996, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport has consecutively won the first prize among airport groups with an annual passenger throughput of over eight million in the "Passengers Poll for Civil Aviation" activities organized by China’s civil aviation industry.

In addition, the other airport in Shanghai is the Pudong International Airport, which is one of the three major international airports in China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). Located in the Pudong district of Shanghai and closed to the southern bank of the Yangtze river estuary coastal zone, Shanghai Pudong International Airport covers an area of 40 square kilometers, about 30 km from Shanghai downtown, and about 60 km to the Hongqiao Airport. Pudong Airport acts as a fast-growing hub for both passengers and cargo traffic. With 3,227,914 metric tonnes of cargo handled in 2010, the airport is the world's third busiest airport in terms of the cargo traffic. Pudong Airport also served a total of 51,651,800 passengers in 2014, what makes it the third busiest airport in mainland China and the 19th busiest in the world. As of December 2011, Pudong Airport hosted 87 airlines serving 194 destinations.

With the development of shanghai airport, we have to mention the Shanghai Airlines which is a wholly owned subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines. Shanghai Airlines is one of the most preferred airlines for travelling. Established in 1985, it is China’s first commercial airline jointly owned by Shanghai       Municipal Government and Shanghai local enterprises. The airline serves over 140 domestic and international destinations, giving access to more than 60 large and medium-sized cities in Mainland China and abroad. Its international flights focus on Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand.
