Hot weekend coming up at live houses
By Nie Xin

AN exciting weekend is coming up for party animals who like live shows.

The Melting Pot, widely known as Bar 288 on Taikang Road, has become one of the city's favorite live houses, led by local pop musician Wang Hao. Almost every night the bar stages shows by local and international bands and vocalists.

Shanghai indie band 5 Pointed Star will stage a nu-metal and hardcore rock show on June 15. The band includes leader and drummer Fan Chengxin, vocalist Zhang Liang, guitarist Chen Zhiwei, bassist Liang Jinkang and DJ Peng Shenggang.

"From a campus group six years ago to an indie band today, we always insist on making music our own way," says Fan.

On the same day, the Shanghai Rose Bar & Cafe in the north Bund area will feature a live show by College, a musical project founded by David Grellier, a French electronic music composer.

College, in Grellier's words, was greatly influenced by American 1980s pop-culture.

JZ Club on Fuxing Road W., the city's most famous jazz venue, will present three live shows this weekend. On June 14 it's the Tico Latin Quartet and band Latino Project; the following night is all about jazz; and on June 16 there's a jazz solo concert by trumpeter Li Xiaochuan.

The Latino Project is the strongest and most dynamic Latin band in Shanghai. Directed by Alvaro Cardenas, the band will play Latin hits from the past and the hottest numbers today. Chekov, a group, combines electronic music with jazz improvisation.

The Red Groove Project will perform after Chekov. This jazz group has been bringing funk and groove music to Beijing and Shanghai since 2004.

Chinese jazz trumpeter, composer and educator Li Xiaochuan will give a solo show on Sunday night, together with guest singer Jasmine Chen.

Since 2001, Li has become one of China's premier jazz musicians.

"My father, is a professional trumpeter, was an early influence and has had the greatest influence on me thus far," says Li, who started playing the trumpet when he was 11.
