IN the build-up to the Shanghai Tourism Festival in September, local authorities are offering 50 percent discounts at 52 scenic spots in the city for five days.

Most sites reported a big jump in visitors when they offered discounts during the “China Tourism Day” in May this year and during the Shanghai Tourism Festival in September last year.

This year, the Shanghai Tourism Bureau have added another 10 tourist spots for discounts, including the Shanghai Grand View Garden and Chocolate Happy Land.

The cruise ship tour on the Huangpu River, which costs 100 yuan (US$16.12) per person, has also been added to the list of discounts for the first time.

The list includes Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Zoo, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, Shanghai Wildlife Park, Chenshan Botanic Garden, Shanghai Happy Valley, Zhujiajiao Water Town, Jinjiang Amusement Park, Madame Tussauds Shanghai and Shanghai World Financial Center.

The offer will be available from September 14 for five days. The festival will run from September 14 to October 6.  It will feature a parade with 20 floats and 29 troupes from 25 countries and include music festivals.

September 14 and 15 is the weekend and the tourism bureau reminded visitors to avoid the peak time.

“There will probably be long queues at some scenic spots and the cruise ship tour ticketing center on Zhongshan No.2 Road E. Visitors are being advised to avoid going there during peak hours,” a bureau official said.
