Opened by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Shanghai Branch, the Shanghai Bank Museum is the first museum of the financial industry of China. It was opened in 2000.
With an area of 1,500 square meters, the museum has more than 20,000 exhibits related to the banking business and displays 2,000 of them to the public. The exhibits concentrate on the development of Shanghai’s banks. Visitors can see different bank notes, banking tools, coins and financial publications of different eras in the museum.
The display includes some very rare artifacts such as a collection of all the 1,113 kinds of bank notes issued by 54 banks from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) to the Republic of China period (1911-1949). It’s the only remaining collection of its kind.
