Transport: There's a free shuttle bus every half hour from Xinzhuang metro station, North exit. Last buses depart at 9pm. Taxi from the metro to the center costs around 15 yuan. At weekends there's a free shuttle bus into Xujiahui every hour from 11pm til 1am.

Opened in 2002 the Yinqixing indoor ski center is a Sino-Japanese venture that boasts a 380 meters by 80 meters slope and snow at a depth of 50cm. Divided into three sections with increasing degrees of steepness, the slopes are perfect for beginners to try their hand at skiing and snowboarding. If you have friends who came back from skiing in the French Alps with a broken leg, don’t worry, it’s not likely to happen at Yiqixing. The slopes here are gentle and falling over doesn’t hurt (that much).

For beginners the discounted unlimited time ticket on Friday and Saturday nights is a good choice as it gives you time to figure out the basics. It’s available from 7pm to midnight, with shuttle buses back to central Shanghai after the metro closes.

Bring warm, long sleeved clothing because though your ticket includes ski/snowboard hire plus some winter clothes and gloves, the rented clothes are rather thin and we’re not sure how often they are washed. Beginners would also do well to hire a coach for at least half an hour to an hour. He will show you how to put on your skiis or snowboard, and how to get started, stop and turn. Cost of a coach is 280 yuan for an hour for a group of 3-5. There is a coach able to speak English there, so ask for him in advance.
