A red Chinese-style iron gate along the road attracts passers-by to stop and have a look inside. Chinese designer Ming Xu and French architect Virginie Moriette established the design services studio Design MVW in 2005, and opened their showroom and workshop in the former French concession to showcase projects as well as their award-winning furniture collection. Their design furniture has been consistently featured in top-tier design publications and recent design awards including the China Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year (2007) and Best Furniture Design from Elle Decoration International (2006). They were invited to represent Shanghai and China last month for the exhibition called "come to my Place" working with "Experimenta Design" in Amsterdam. Trained in Europe and practicing in Shanghai, the pair draws their inspiration from today's global neoteric lifestyle. Their design constantly challenges the conventional use of space and function, breaking free of the standard paradigm to yield astonishing results. The furniture is underlined by a serene and elegant mode of expression that enables them to remain firmly grounded in reality but encourages others to be inspired by their creations. Inspired by natural forms, timeless elements, and even contemporary art, each design embodies the blending of Eastern and Western traditions.
