There is a popular saying about Dingxiang Garden that the villa inside was bought by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) Prime Minister Li Hongzhang for his favorite ninth wife Ding Xiang. While the garden villa compound became his private escape it belonged to the minster's youngest son Li Jingmai. Nowadays, Dingxiang Garden is regarded as the best garden villa compound in Shanghai, with its typical Chinese-style garden, British-style villas, and extremely good location. Cantonese restaurant Xien Yue Hien is nestled in the sprawling garden compound and is reputed to be one of the city's best Cantonese food outlets, not least for its exclusive garden setting.
