Dominating one corner of the junction of Shaanxi Road N. and Nanjing Road W., the Ping'an Building is hard to miss. Built in 1923, the redbrick construction is a circumjacent apartment with seven floors in a reinforced concrete structure. The ground floor of the building housed the Spanish Consulate in the 1930s but in 1939 it was converted into the Uptown Theater (with Ping'an Theater as its Chinese name). The building has
frequently appeared in TV series and movies, particularly recently in "Lust, Caution" based on legendary Chinese writer Eileen Chang’s short story. In the first half of 2006, the Ping’an Theater was taken over and reconverted with an upmarket trendy style to be the Spanish brand ZARA's first flagship store in China. Located in the golden district of Shanghai, the Ping'an building has become a well-known landmark among the city's multi-style buildings on a busy intersection in the heart of the retail district.
