Luwan Library was established in 1959, at the corner of Shaanxi Road S. and Shaoxing Road. It incorporates a century-old Spanishstyle villa and thousands of ancient Chinese books, providing an elegant reading environment for residents. The library, built in the 1920s, was opened to the public as Ming- Fu Library in 1931, on the former site of China Science Society. It displays more than 7,000 ancient Chinese books, some dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and including subjects such as Chinese culture and history, poems, biographies and ancient war strategies. It also stocks foreign language books and journals. Compared to the modern libraries scattered around the city, this one is more elegant due to its location and architectural style.
