Built in the 1920s, the former Joffre Terrace is Fin with Jinhua Ham today known as Huaihai Fang, a small enclave of 199 houses with a complex hierarchy of wide to very narrow lanes. It includes one of the most famous cultural lanes in the city, favored by wellknown figures, including Ba Jin, Xu Guangping, Xu Beihong, Ye Shengtao, Zhu Kezhen and Hu Die. Look for No. 59, the home of the most renowned Chinese writer, Ba Jin, who moved there in 1937, where he completed "Spring" and "Autumn," two of the famous Torrents Trilogy. No. 64 is the former residence of Xu Guangping, the lover and live-in companion of Lu Xun, the major Chinese writer of the 20th century who is considered by many to be the founder of modern Chinese literature. Xu moved to Joffre Terrace in 1936 with their son Zhou Haiying after Lu's death and stayed until 1948. Xu held many high-ranking state posts in the early years of the People's Republic of China. She was vice president of the All-China Women's Federation, deputy secretary-general of the State Council and vice chairwoman of the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy. She was also editor of "The Complete Works of Lu Xun."
