An old, plain villa house off the quiet Wuyuan Road is the former residence of Zhang Leping (1910-1992), an illustrator of comics who played a key role in the development of China's modern use of the art form. He is mainly remembered for his work in creating the character "Sanmao" which has been popular with many generations of young Chinese. His most influential work, the Sanmao series started in 1935 to convey the hardships of war time - as a result of the Japanese troop's invasion - seen through the eyes of children, especially orphans on the street. The character became a symbol for them and in subsequent years featured in a number of movies, cartoons and other forms of media, including being introduced to overseas markets. Zhang lived in the residence from the 1950s and it is where he completed much of his signature art work. Today, his studio retains the atmosphere of the artist at work and is kept as he left it. The house is listed as a protected historical building.
