No. 170 Nanyang Road is an impressive Chinese mansion set in a garden that once belonged to the Bei family which became extremely prosperous during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and later bought Suzhou's famous Lion Grove Garden in 1917. Famous family members include Bei Runsheng, known locally in his day as the "king of pigments?for his paint and dye business, who had also helped finance the 1911 revolution and founded many schools. Bei Zuyi was president of the Chinese Central Bank in 1946 and the renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei, also known as Bei Yuming to people on the Chinese mainland, left to study in the United States at age 17. His design work gained international recognition through the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the "glass pyramid?addition to the Louvre in Paris, the 72-story Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong and the Suzhou Museum completed in 2006.
