Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, this small museum is a rare gem. Founded in 1987, the one-story gallery is so small it's more like a showroom, yet holds over 500 musical instruments. There are four exhibition areas, for ancient and modern Chinese instruments, those of China's minority nationalities and foreign nationalities. The collections of oriental instruments are comprehensive, with sections dedicated to South Korea, Japan, India and Southeast Asia, alongside those from China. A multimedia guide and electronic search system is a valuable collection guide.
