De Da Western Food Restaurant is like that bar from the 1980s' sitcom "Cheers" - cheap, friendly, local and the kind of place where everyone knows your name. The restaurant which was established in 1897 moved recently to its present location on Nanjing Road W. But the interior still transmits that old world atmosphere. The walls are panelled with dark oak wood, the tiles have a mosaic touch of old Spain and arch-shaped window frames provide a kitsch romantic setting for lovers to dine. The dishes range from the basic (green salad) to the exotic (oyster) but the prices are all very reasonable. Appetizers and soups are around the 15-25 yuan mark, while the mains range from 45 yuan to 100 yuan. Wanting to quickly fuel up? A bolognaise pasta will set you back only 20 yuan. The cuisine is mainly Western but served in a quintessential Shanghai manner - simple and fast, minus the pomp and ceremony. You will find Russian borsch, French snails and goose liver and imported steak from Australia. The dinner sets start from 108 yuan and feature cod, lamb or crabmeat. It's cheap and it's got atmosphere but the downside is you will have to listen to a painful mixed tape of power ballads like "I Will Always Love You" and "My Heart Will Go On."
