Lingo on Nanjing Road W. started when three former Shanghai flatmates - a Frenchman, New Zealander and Chinaman - got talking over some wines one night. Their idea was simple: to give people good food and wine at affordable prices. Lionel Baudoux says that bistros in France are humble dining spots everyone can eat at, but in Shanghai they are marketed to the wealthy. Lingo changes that. The interior is unpretentious and friendly with loads of magazines for skimming through in your down time and wireless for the busy worker. You can share a bottle of wine (100 yuan) with a friend after work, or grab one of the lunch sets for 58 yuan on your break. For dinner, 98 yuan gets you two courses and a glass of wine. Lingo is also getting very "retro" and has brought back the cheese fondue for 98 yuan. Brush up on your language in the English and Chinese corners.
