Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the oldest academic institutions in China. It has many Shanghai excellent heritage buildings, including the teaching block (1898), library (1919) and school gate (1935). Its antecedent was Nan Yang Public School, founded in 1896 by an imperial edict of the Guangxu Emperor under the imperial government's Business and Telegraphs Office. Sheng Xuanhuai, the edict proposer, became the first president and is regarded as its founder. The name has changed many times, including Nan Yang University of the Communications Ministry (1922-1927) and National Chiao Tung University (1946-1949). It got its current name in 1959 and is a leading research and higher education institution. It has many famous alumni, including Jiang Zemin, former secretary general of the Communist Party of China and president of the People's Republic of China, Wang Daohan, who held many high-ranking Chinese government posts and Qian Xuesen, considered the father of China's space program.
