The Shanghai Japanese School's predecessor'The Japanese Government General Consulate of Shanghai, Shanghai Japanese School' was founded in April, 1987.
The objective of the Shanghai Japanese School is to provide a 9-year compulsory education system based on Japanese fundamental law and educational methods to the children of Japanese nationals living in the People's Republic of China, Shanghai and it's suburbs using Japanese domestic textbooks and scientific methods.
The Shanghai Japanese School is located the Hongqiao school district (floor space 8727m2) and the Pudong school district (floor space 4643m2).
The Hongqiao school district facility employs 61 Japanese- citizen educators to provide education to 1340 students
from Elementary School Grade 1 through Elementary School Grade 6. The Pudong school district facility employs 61 Japanesecitizen educators to provide education to 1079
students from Elementary School Grade 1 through Elementary School Grade 6, as well as Middle School Grade 7 through Middle School Grade 9.
The Shanghai Japanese School takes the issue of raising student's international understanding seriously and therefore
provides weekly Chinese and English conversation classesst arting from Elementary School Grade 1.
Each grade's students at the Shanghai Japanese School have the opportunity to visit with Shanghai's Area Elementary and Middle Schools in order to carry out friendly exchanges.
