Soong Ching-Ling, the honorary chairwoman of the People's Republic of China, lived and worked in this building in Shanghai since 1948. After her death in 1981 the Soong Ching-Ling Former Residence was opened to the public and in 2001 the State Council approved it as a key national heritage conservation unit.
Built in the early 1920s, the 4,330-square-meter building is surrounded by evergreen trees and an elegant environment. The brick building was built in a Western style with the living room, kitchen, libraries and dining room at the bottom and the bedrooms and office on the second floor. A lawn measuring 2,200 square meters, where Soong took walks and met her friends, surrounds the residence.
Today the home furnishings remain the way Soong left it. There is a white marble statue of Soong in front of the building, showing a very dignified and kind middle-aged woman. The statue was erected in January 27, 2003, at the 110th anniversary of Soong’s birth. Inside the residence an exhibition hall displays the brilliant life of Soong Ching-Ling from different perspectives.
