Located near People’s Square in the center of Shanghai, Moore Memorial Church (also known as Mu-en Church, literally “Church to receive the blessing of God”) is a beautiful Gothic structure with a tall bell tower.
The church was erected by American missionaries in 1887 and rebuilt in 1931 to seat more than 1,000 worshippers. The five-meter high neon cross on the top of the bell tower was built in 1936 with the donation from an American worshipper and this giant and impressive cross has since made the church a landmark around People’s Square.
The church is open only at specific times during the week and especially on Sundays, when visitors are welcome to do their worshipping. Passers-by can feel peace and hope when hearing the sound of the bell from the tower bell every morning. And on Christmas, Easter and other important Christian holidays, religious rites and rituals are conducted in the church.
