The Couple’s Retreat Garden was built in the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In 1874, it was bought by Shen Bingcheng, a government official who expanded the garden and divided it into eastern and western parts. The garden’s name refers both to its divided structure and to its suitability for visiting couples.
The Couple’s Retreat Garden boasts a unique structure amongst Suzhou’s classical gardens. The residential area sits in the middle of the compound, with the two gardens situated on either side. The eastern garden is considered the more magnificent of the two, displaying yellow rock formations, the most prominent of which rises from a pond. The 0.8-hectare complex is rectangular in shape, with water bordering it on three sides.
