Located in the west of Suzhou, Taihu Lake National Wetland Park adjoins Taihu Lake westward and borders the famous Chinese embroidery town of Zhenhu. With a total planned area of 4.6 square kilometers, the park has so far opened 2.3 square kilometers to the pubic as part of its first phase. As a natural wetland, Suzhou Taihu Lake National Wetland Park is set at a beautiful bay in Taihu Lake featuring abundant reeds, lotuses, water caltrops as well as fish, shrimps and clams in an area surrounded by flying egrets, croaking frogs, and singing birds. The park area was historically called “Youhu” (a lake for entertainment) as the Wu Emperor during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-467 BC) often came here for entertainment.
As a scenic spot combining “nature, ecology and rural charms,” the park offers seven functional sections including wetland fishing, wetland exhibitions, wetland ecology, wetland ecological cultivation, water town tourism and leisure, wetland ecological scientific education, and primitive wetland conservation. Both culture and education feature strongly in the park’s main attractions, like Suzhou Expo Pavilion and Peninsula Teahouse where you will experience authentic Suzhou traditions, or Rare Birds’ Island and Panda Science Museum – two spots to enhance your ecological knowledge.
The establishment of Taihu Lake National Wetland Park has tremendously improved the ecological environment of Suzhou High-tech Zone and become a new landmark of Suzhou tourism.
