Bolaven Cafe is a small coffee shop situated on the corner of Fuxing Road and Wulumuqi Road, offering coffees and teas with the option to sit in or take away. It can seat up to 10 people and the atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful. While the cafe is a cosy spot, the main aim of the venture is to raise awareness of the coffee beans used, which are also sold separately.
Bolaven coffee is grown in southern Laos and is part of a socio-economic rejuvenation project which aims to provide Laotian farmers with the education, incentive and capacity to produce high-quality coffee beans using sustainable methods. The project was started in 2006 by Laotian refugee and businessman, Sam Say. Say aims to establish a future for Laotian farmers, providing them with a means of making their own money and success. There is also a heavy emphasis on quality; all the coffee sold at Bolaven Cafe is organic and fair trade.
Bolaven Cafe coffees are priced at between 15 (US$ 2.3) and 30 yuan. Also available are several teas and healthy drink options - including sanqi flower and oolong tea. There are also several Bolaven coffee shops in Hong Kong and Malaysia, each non-profit with the specific purpose of promoting the coffee bean. Bolaven Cafe provides delicious coffee, a beautiful environment and provides an opportunity to support Laotian coffee farmers.
