Flying Lotus, the godfather of LA’s infamous beat scene is China bound at last. For more than a decade now Flylo has been cultivating a unique strain of jazzy, futuristic hip-hop, creating some truly culture-shifting art as a producer, rapper, visual artist, and live performer. He’s unleashed 5 LPs, a number of EPs, 1 mixtape (as rapping alter-ego, Captain Murphy), and countless collabs/remixes, all the while touring with one of the most visually thrilling live shows around.
Flylo started his career producing tracks for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, adorning the channel with snippets of funky cosmic beats and defining his sound early on as intoxicating and absurd. In 2006 he released his first album, 1983, and subsequently signed with Warp records (Autechre, Aphex Twin) before the release of his second LP, Los Angeles, in 2008. In that same year Flylo established Brainfeeder, his own record label which would come to sign artists of a similarly experimental persuasion, including Thundercat, Tokimonsta, Teebs, Mono/Poly, Kamasi Washington, Daedalus, Mr. Oizo, Lapalux, and more.
Through his later albums, Cosmogramma, Until the Quiet Comes, and You’re Dead!, Flylo’s music continued to increase in complexity and substance, garnering attention for its intelligent and soulful manipulation of time signatures, texture, and tricky rhythms. Most songs seem to occur at some strange convergence of time and space and feel a lot like dreams, carrying a mysterious (at times nightmarish) beauty. Some are soft and brooding while others are fierce beyond words, but most fall somewhere in between, all held together by recurring themes of death, the afterlife, and dreamlike states. It’s some of the most emotionally and intellectually provocative music you can find, and it’s no wonder so many big names have sought him out for collaboration, including Thom Yorke, Eyrkah Badu, Herbie Hancock, Burial, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, Earl Sweatshirt and many more.
It’s hard to point to someone more deeply influential on the underground electronic scene than Flying Lotus. His show is a fully immersive experience with a full LIVE visual set-up on stage! Flylo will be supported by STD's R3, ADO8 and LINFENG. This qualifies as one of those rare opportunities to glimpse into the mind of one of most talented producers alive. Come get infected.
