A solo exhibition of Xu Jiang is showcased at China Art Museum. This exhibition, titled "Eastern Sunflowers," features nearly 60 canvases, about 100 water color paintings and a cluster of sculptures. Born in 1955 in southeast China's Fujian Province, Xu, a graduate from the oil painting Department of the China Academy of Art, is now the director of the academy. He belongs to the generation that was assigned to the countryside for labor training to "purify their souls" during Cultural Revolution(1966-1976). He was also one of the young Chinese intellectuals who furthered their studies in the West after the launch of China's opening-up policy. Xu feels that sunflowers leaning towards the sun are similar to Chinese people, or a nation that has suffered too much in the past, yet still radiate and unyielding power.
