The two-act ballet “La Sylphide,” which will be performed in Shanghai by the Royal Danish Ballet, was the first ballet dancing en pointe and announced a new Romantic era of dance. Although the original version was choreographed by Filippo Taglioni as a showcase for his daughter at the Paris Opera in 1832, the Danish ballet master August Bournonville’s adaptation in 1836 for the Royal Danish Ballet is the only version known to have survived. La Sylphide tells the story of James, a young Scotsman, who wakes from a dream on the morning of his wedding to see a beautiful winged sylph before him. His obsession with the creature risks his happiness. The ballet is typical of the romantic period.
